Biography
Xiaobang Shang received a BEng degree (First Class) in Electronic and Communication Engineering in 2008 and a PhD in Microwave Engineering in 2011 from the University of Birmingham, UK. After completing his doctorate, he continued at the University of Birmingham as a Research Fellow.
He joined NPL in 2017 as a Senior Scientist and was promoted to Principal Scientist in 2023. His work focuses on microwave, millimetre‑wave, and terahertz electrical measurements supporting future telecommunications and quantum technologies. He coordinated the EU EMPIR TEMMT project (2019–2022) and currently leads the EU EPM 6GOnWafer project (2026–2029), advancing on‑wafer metrology and semiconductor material characterisation.
Dr. Shang is a Senior Member of IEEE and has authored or co‑authored more than 130 publications. He has received several prestigious awards, including the IEEE MTT‑S Outstanding Young Engineer Award (2025), the EuMA Roberto Sorrentino Prize (2022), the IEEE MTT-S Tatsuo Itoh Award (2017), and the ARFTG Roger Pollard Microwave Measurement Student Fellowship (2009). He has held multiple ARFTG technical program roles, including TPC Chair for the 106th ARFTG, TPC Co‑Chair for the 107th ARFTG, and Chair for the 109th ARFTG, and also serves as General TPC Chair for EuMW 2026.
